One of a kind vases

Every creation is followed individually from its design up to its firing with great care and dedication.

All vases are entirely hand-crafted, without any use of mould. Slight variations between the chosen model and the actual vase are natural, they are an integral part of the production and philosophy of Studio Terrae.

Each vase is marked on the bottom with the studio’ stamp and comes with a certificate of authenticity that testifies of its quality and uniqueness.

Colors and textures

Studio Terrae wishes to communicate authenticity and simplicity. The colours of the clay range from the delicate ashes to a most intense graphite, from a warm coffee and a deep coral to the impalpable antique pink.

Scratched, engraved, spatulated, smoothed, the texture is always realized by hand, piece after piece, with tools specially chosen according to the type of clay. The finish is an essential part of the materiality, a process that contributes to the preservation of the clay’s porosity and the plant’s well-being.

Sizes

Each creation Studio Terrae is unique and entirely handcrafted. For this reason their dimensions cannot be totally standardized but four sizes have been designed:

Small: approx. 25 cm width
 or 35 cm high
Medium: approx. 35 cm width
 or 45 cm high

Large: approx. 45 cm width
 or 55 cm high

Extra-Large: approx. 60 cm width
 or 70 cm high

Studio Terrae can also create vases in particular size adapted for specific types of plants and locations.

The creations are all unique pieces, small differences in the size and shape may appear.

The drainage system

It consists of a double internal base that does not alter the purity of the vase’s lines and maintains a water balance in order to avoid unnecessary stress to the plants. Small holes on the base/side of the vase maintain proper aeration and allow to avoid stagnation by emptying the excess water.

Each vase is accompanied by a small hand-made cap to be placed inside the vase in order to prevent the roots and the soil from entering the double internal base.

Moreover, the firing at 1050°C enables the clay to maintain its natural porosity, allowing the plant to establish a vital exchange relationship with its vase.

Cold exposure

The vases are designed for indoor use. For a use outside, Studio Terrae realizes on request vases with cold-resistant clays, without double internal base but with a drain hole drilled at the bottom of the vase to maintain proper drainage. Although the clay we use for outdoor vases is frost proof, they should never be subject to snow & ice weather conditions as water will expand when frozen. Best practice is to store ceramic vases indoors for the winter months.

A living material

Our vases have a porous quality uniquely designed for healthy plant growth. The clay body allows plant roots to breathe through the container walls.

Clay is a natural and “alive” material. As such it can change over time by showing traces of every natural element it comes into contact with (oxygen, water, mineral salts). Slight alterations of colour on the surface of the vase may appear and slowly form a natural patina. This phenomenon is a totally natural process and does not affect its quality. On the contrary, it is a very important indication of the close relationship between the clay, the soil and the plant.
Tiepid water and white vinegar can help remove deposits that may develop from hard water.

The packaging

In line with the philosophy of Studio Terrae, each vase is packed without any use of plastic: kraft paper, natural straw, cardboard, paper tape and paper labels. Any part of it can be composted, recycled or reused in order to participate to a circular economy.

To ensure the well-being of the plants, all orders include a booklet with tips and advices about the good use of the vases, the repotting of the plants and their watering.

The repotting

On request, Studio Terrae can assist in the repotting of plants. We look for the most suitable soil for each type of plant, take care of the roots that can be enlarged, cleaned and delicately cut a little to improve the growth, ensure the balance of the plant in its vase, fix its natural orientation, and guarantee a most complete service. From the vases' modeling to repotting, a long and stimulating process that is a natural extension of our ceramic studio, always for the best of plants.
